Knebworth Park v Radlett CC 1st XI on Sat 07 May 2005 at 11:30
Match was Drawn
Match report
SOUTH African star Shane Burger hammered 89 runs as Radlett had the better of a draw at Knebworth Park on Saturday in Division Two of the HCPL.
Radlett lost the toss and were asked to bat by the home team. They then set about the bowlers and reached 235-5 with all the batsmen making runs. Brenden Hutchings was unlucky to be run out for 27 but South African sensation Shane Burger went on to make a classic 89. Graham Dill (35) and skipper Haydn Smith (34 not out) provided excellent support.
Radlett declared a little early to allow more time to bowl but with hindsight Vice-captain Graham Dill felt they perhaps had racked up too many runs. He said: "We maybe scored too many as the pitch made it difficult to bowl them out."
Tight bowling from Radlett soon put Knebworth out of the game and the home team were forced to dig in with Radlett needing wickets to win. Stuart Browne (4-52) Shane Burger and Haydn Smith (3-21) bowled well but, with a slow pitch, Radlett had to settle for the better of a drawn game. Dill said: "We felt beforehand that if we played well we would win but the pitch made it a little too difficult in the end. They did their job well defensively and we managed to take eight wickets. I thought that was a creditable effort from us."
Some marginal factors swung the game away from Radlett. Dill said: "In order to win we needed a bit more luck with the LBWs and also should have held a couple of catches."
Next up for Radlett on Saturday is their first match at Cobden Hill this season against Stevenage. Dill said: "They won their first game and are a good side. There are a lot of our guys in good form though and we are ready for a good game. We have had good preparation for the season and confidence is high."
